sunset song

the
sunset song was one of the first songs i ever wrote, and it is also one of
my favourite songs—maybe because I’ve been singing it the longest. the
melody was born in a family jam session. the words are inspired by a man who
came in and out of my life pretty much exactly like the story in the song
describes. while in the arms of this man, he read me the little prince.
there is one particular passage in which the little prince meets a king.
this king brags very confidently (and long- windedly) about the superiority
of his kingly skills. apparently, everything he commanded to happen was
carried out exactly. after he had patiently endured the lecture, the little
prince cleverly said, “then order me a sunset.” the king wisely replied, “i
will in eight hours,” and he went on to explain that the key to obtaining
your desire is to desire what is obtainable. that’s what makes a king. so, a
song about a desire i once had for a certain kind of love, like a child
desiring a sunset in the middle of the day.

looking
up: recorded between the ages of 17 (sunflower and the rose) and 21
(vicariously addicted—a spontaneous one take), this album is a collection of
songs that i was raised on. these are the songs i have sung over and over to
friends and family in their living rooms. these are the songs I used to sing
spontaneously to church congregations when no one remembered to arrange for
a musical number that week. these are some of the songs that made me love to
sing and made some of you love to listen. soft they are to babies ears, and
clear they are to the reverent, grown-up heart
